Setting up your router on campus
Remember: If you own the device that is allowing others to connect, you are responsible for their network activity.
Vista systems
Make sure that Network Sharing is turned off on all network cards (wired and wireless). Failure to do this can cause network problems for not only you but other people in your building. If it is suspected that your machine is causing network problems for other people, your network connection will be shut off without notice and you will need to contact the HelpDesk to have it re-enabled.
Personal routers on campus
Wired routers are preferred. For most reliable network service, plug directly into the wall.
Register your router at the Technology HelpDesk.
The Ethernet cord that comes from the jack in the wall is to be placed in the “WAN” port or in come cases “Internet” port on the router Refer to directions that came with your router on how to connect to the network.

Security is to be set up on all routers – see the directions that came with your router on how to set up security.
Some routers support both wired and wireless connections – turn off wireless if possible. However, if you choose to enable wireless, the University recommends that you configure your wireless security using the WPA2 protocol with a Pre-Shared key (WPA2-PSK), along with AES encryption.
If a problem arises contact the Technology HelpDesk for assistance.
Wireless routers in close proximity can cause interference on the network and interfere with the universities wireless network. Symptoms are:
- Slow response
- Connection drops frequently
Students should be aware that there is nothing the University can do about this other than pulling routers. Only one wireless router is to be used in each room – having more may cause radio interference and neither will be able to get on the network.

Routers are to be set to 10 ½ duplex. The wiring is old in the building and uses CAT 3 (very old). Do not use “automatic” as a setting as it will not work.
Wired network cards are to be set to SPEED=10Megs and DUPLEX=half.
